Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry Review

Time to get back on that AC4 train with Adéwalé in his fight against slavery in Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry.

AC4_DLC7_heroYeah, I couldn’t make a joke about Freedom Cry like I usually do with other games. The subject of slavery is a deep one, one that you can’t joke about.

Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry features Adéwalé as he gets stranded on Port-au-Prince when he intercepted a Templar ship. Now he is fighting to help free the slaves on the island. Wow Ubisoft, I never thought you guys would never go this route. What happened to all your pretty white boy protagonists? Don’t answer that. Adéwalé is cool and he needs the spotlight.

FreedomCryBlunderThe game plays just like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag since Freedom Cry is a DLC of the game, but you can also buy it as a standalone. Combat and ship sailing is the same as AC4, so there isn’t much to talk about in that retrospect. The only new thing that was added to combat was the blunderbuss. The blunderbuss is like a shotgun with amazing range and spread. Sadly, I didn’t use the blunderbuss much at all but it was a nice addition to the game.

To unlock certain missions, you must liberate a specific amount of slaves. To liberate slaves, you must either buy them at auction for 500 reales, save them from a beating, rescue them while they are escaping, carry an injured slave to safety, rescue them from jail, save them from a plantation, and rescue them from a slave ship. I may be forgetting one of the options but the options are vast and you can liberate the slaves in any way you want.

freedom-cry-4-1024x576The game is very short in length. It took me about three hours to complete the game. And for a game that is a standalone, $15 is too much (the DLC version is $10). Just wait for it to be on sale before getting it.

Here is something to beware of if you have it on PS3 or PS4: play it while offline. Yes, you heard me right. In order to play Freedom Cry, whether it is the standalone or the DLC, you have to play it offline. If you play it while you are online, the game will freeze. I had it happen to me twice before I looked it up online and found that I wasn’t the only one with the problem. This problem has been going on since DECEMBER 2014. It has been six months and the problem hasn’t been fixed yet. I was able to play the game offline just fine. Just remember to get online after you finished the game to sync your trophies. I don’t know if the Xbox versions of the game does the same but for Playstation users, play offline.

Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry is a great addition to the Assassin’s Creed series. And it is great to see a person of color being the main character and to have such a heavy subject as slavery being dealt with. Just remember PS users to play offline.

Hey Ubisoft, why don’t you tell me that your credits LOOP OVER AND OVER AGAIN! I didn’t notice it until I saw the Japanese voice cast twice. Idiots…
