Analogue: A Hate Story Review

Analogue: A Hate Story is a sci-fi mystery Visual Novel title. You’ve been instructed to find out what happened to a ship many years ago.

You’ve been assigned a mission – to download any log files you can and find out what happened to the Mugunghwa. The ship has been drifting endlessly, and lifelessly, in orbit for a long time now. That’s the basis to Analogue: A Hate Story. You’ll find an AI on the ship, and you’ll need to work with them (in what ways you can through limited ability to communicate anyways) to solve what happened.

As is expected in a Visual Novel, there is a lot of reading. You’ll have to make some choices that will affect what you’re ss_a5ff3ae7857f2ad5ea5c755ab7247da427e3c740able to find in the logs. Do you choose to stay with this AI, or that AI? How do you help the ship when it enters a critical moment? What will you do in the end when you’re ready to download the files and go home? Who do you believe? These are choices you’ll have to make, though the last one is more of a choice you make to yourself over within the game. If you want the full story, you’ll be playing the game even longer to make other choices and to stick with another AI.

The writing is absolutely fantastic, though I spotted a few spots where I questioned if that was the proper way to say something or if it was a typo. As I was reading through the various logs, I found myself wanting more. If ever I wanted a break for a bit, I would tell myself “okay, just one more.” Yeah, I think most people know how the “just one more” thing typically ends up going.

The game has 4 endings to achieve based on your choices. While I’ve only obtained one ending so far, I’ll probably be going back at some point to try and get more and to find out more about what happened.

You’ll also be able to get a good look into what society was like on the ship. How daughters are married off without any pretense of love. You’ll get a small glimpse into what it was like on Earth before this ship set off as well – that things were like how we know them today. This all just adds greatly into the backstory which is a huge part of the Visual Novel as a whole.

If you’re looking for a good, multi-path, Visual Novel, then check out Analogue: A Hate Story. After playing through Analogue: A Hate Story, I’ll probably be looking into getting its sequel at some point – Hate Plus. Overall though, this is definitely very high on my list of recommendations, especially for sci-fi and mystery fans.

  1. Only thing to note about this review is there’s actually 5 endings, though the 5th is gained via unconventional means.

But yeah, this was a great game. Loved it and the sequel.
